Permission was granted for the demolition the old hospital and construction of 47 residential units in 2016. An application to propose the detailed design of the buildings was submitted in 2022.


Considerable objections were received from the adjoining site owners and by both the Town Council and the Society. The reasons of objection were the height of the buildings and overlooking, also its appearance being out of keeping with the surrounding street scene.

Following these comments, major changes to the layout and design were proposed by the Architects. These were submitted last month to the Council for consideration. Details of all the revised proposals can be seen on the Council website. The District Council meeting held on the 16th of October finally approved the designs despite the continued opposition of both the locals and Hythe Town Council.
