Introduction
This research explores the history of the land at the former Nos. 1 and 2, now Nos. 5 and 7, Castle Road, near the corner of Hillcrest Road opposite the allotments.
It traces the hillside’s journey from agricultural pasture to a military encampment during the Napoleonic Wars, its return to farmland, and its eventual development into a residential street in the late Victorian period.
Drawing on historic maps, census returns and property records, it also explores the lives of the Blakiston family, whose story is closely linked to these houses from the 1890s to around 1930.
